Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, addressed the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions After Recent Remarks
Maresca's most recent statement follow after he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread speculation of a potential disagreement between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has equally been no apology offered, leaving the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has grown notably strained, leading to fears it could impact what has up to now been a decent beginning to the season.
